The Research That Explains Why This Is Harder For You

If you read one study about your own odds, make it this one.

Raj Chetty and the Opportunity Insights team at Harvard analyzed 21 billion friendships and found that the strongest community level predictor of upward mobility for low income children was not school quality or local inequality. It was economic connectedness: how often people across income lines actually become friends.

Low income children who grew up in highly connected communities earned about 20 percent more as adults. The researchers put that on par with two additional years of college.

Now the number that names the problem out loud. Fewer than two percent of the friends of people in the bottom ten percent of the income distribution come from the top ten percent. Meanwhile, 34 percent of the friends of people in the top ten percent come from the top ten percent.

This is not about being liked. Networks are sorted by class, sharply, and that sorting moves money. It is the clearest explanation of the FGLI disadvantage anyone has produced.

Here is what to do with that.

First, stop treating networking as something slick people do. What the research measures is friendship and proximity, not schmoozing. Sitting on a project team with someone whose parents are attorneys is the mechanism.

Second, understand that college is temporarily flattening this for you. Right now you have structured, free access to people whose networks you will never again be handed for the price of showing up: classmates, professors, alumni, guest speakers. After graduation that access closes fast.

Third, be deliberate about it. Study groups, clubs, research labs, and campus jobs put you in mixed rooms. Take the ones that do.
